How to Choose the Right Wheels

Consider the Weight

Steel Wheels

Steel is heavier, though cheaper, than its alloy counterparts. Steel is hardy and great for work vehicles and anything traveling rough terrain. However, you won’t get the same MPG or handling that you do with alloy.

Alloy Wheels

Alloy wheels are lighter and sportier than steel. This means they handle better and improve your MPG. They’re also perceived as more stylish than steel wheels.

You’ll pay more for alloy, but if you aren’t using your vehicle for heavy work, alloy wheels have lots of perks.

Size is a Factor

Large wheels mean smaller sidewalls on the tires. If you want larger wheels and more sidewall, you’ll need to lift the vehicle to accommodate. Otherwise, you’ll rub the tires as you make turns. However, larger wheels also mean a higher top speed - though acceleration takes longer.

A smaller wheel allows for more sidewall. If you want to go offroading, having larger tires and smaller wheels is better. When you air your tires down, you’ll have a larger contact patch with the ground and improved traction and comfort.

Lug Pattern

Make sure you’re selecting the correct lug pattern for your wheels. It’s crucial that you choose the same lug pattern as the wheels you have right now, or your new wheels won’t fit.

Wheels have five different lug patterns: 3 lug, 4 lug, 5 lug, 6 lug, and 8 lug.

5 and 6 lugs are the most common patterns. However, some smaller vehicles - like subcompact sedans - may have four, and larger ones - like super duty trucks - may have eight.
